Mowgli (The Jungle Book)

Who is Mowgli?

Mowgli is the central character in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, a beloved tale of adventure and self-discovery.

Mowgli the jungle book

Raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, Mowgli is a human child (a “man-cub”) who navigates the challenges of surviving among wild animals while learning about the human world. His journey is deeply intertwined with his relationships with the animals, including the protective black panther Bagheera, the free-spirited bear Baloo, and his nemesis, the fearsome tiger Shere Khan. Mowgli’s story is one of belonging and identity, as he struggles to reconcile his human heritage with his love for the jungle.

The character has been portrayed by several actors in various adaptations. In Disney’s 1967 animated classic, Mowgli was voiced by Bruce Reitherman, the son of the film’s director, Wolfgang Reitherman. In Disney’s 2016 live-action/CGI film The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau, Mowgli was played by Neel Sethi in a widely acclaimed performance. Sethi’s portrayal captured the innocence, bravery, and resourcefulness of the character, even as he acted alongside digitally rendered animals.
