Who is Pocahontas?

Pocahontas, the titular character of Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas, is a strong, free-spirited young woman who serves as a bridge between her Powhatan tribe and English settlers.

Inspired by the historical figure of the same name, Pocahontas is depicted as a wise and adventurous individual, deeply connected to nature and her heritage. She is known for her bravery and her desire to promote understanding and peace between her people and the newcomers. The character’s story revolves around her encounter with Captain John Smith and her struggle to reconcile her duty to her people with her feelings for him. Through her journey, Pocahontas teaches lessons of tolerance, love, and the importance of living in harmony with the world around us.

In the film, Pocahontas’s speaking voice was provided by Irene Bedard, a Native American actress celebrated for her authentic representation of Indigenous characters. Her singing voice, on the other hand, was performed by Judy Kuhn, whose rendition of the song Colors of the Wind became iconic and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
