Who is Tweedledum and Tweedledee?
Tweedledum and Tweedledee are whimsical, mischievous characters from Disney’s animated classic Alice in Wonderland (1951), based on Lewis Carroll’s novel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. The twin brothers are known for their rotund appearances, striped shirts, bow ties, and beanie caps with propellers. They are mirror images of each other, often speaking in unison or completing each other’s sentences, and their behavior is both playful and perplexing.
In Disney’s adaptation, Tweedledum and Tweedledee meet Alice in the Tulgey Wood, where they entertain her with a curious and somewhat eerie song-and-dance recital of “The Walrus and the Carpenter,” a poem from Carroll’s book. The poem becomes a story-within-a-story, narrated dramatically by the twins. Their presence adds to the surreal and nonsensical atmosphere of Wonderland.
The characters were voiced by J. Pat O’Malley, a versatile actor who also provided the voices for the Carpenter and the Walrus in the same film. O’Malley’s vocal performance brought humor and charm to the twins, capturing their quirky personalities. Tweedledum and Tweedledee remain fan favorites, embodying the delightful absurdity that defines Alice in Wonderland.
