Who is Maleficent?

Maleficent is a fictional character and the main antagonist of the 1959 Disney animated feature film Sleeping Beauty and the 2014 live-action film Maleficent. She is a powerful fairy who is known for her beauty, but also for her evil nature. In the original animated film, she curses the newborn Princess Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, as revenge for not being invited to her christening.

In the live-action film, her backstory is explored and it’s revealed that she was once a kind and peaceful fairy, but after being betrayed by the human king, Stefan, she becomes a vengeful and powerful fairy. She is known for her iconic horns, her black wings, and her ability to cast powerful spells and curses.

She was voiced by actress Eleanor Audley (who also played Lady Tremaine in Cinderella and Madame Leota in The Haunted Mansion attractions) and animated by Marc Davis.
