Who is Moana Waialiki?
Moana Waialiki is the spirited and adventurous protagonist of Disney’s Moana (2016), a groundbreaking animated film celebrating Polynesian culture and mythology. She is the daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, hailing from the island of Motunui.
Destined to lead her people, Moana is drawn to the ocean and its mysteries, despite her father’s insistence that she remain within the island’s boundaries. Her adventurous nature and deep connection to the sea ultimately lead her on a daring journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti, a goddess whose power ensures the balance of life.
Moana’s story is not just one of heroism but also self-discovery. Along the way, she meets Maui, a demigod whose larger-than-life personality and magical fishhook aid her quest. Together, they face monstrous challenges, including the fiery Te Kā, and rediscover the voyaging heritage of her ancestors.
Auliʻi Cravalho, a native Hawaiian actress and singer, brought Moana to life with her voice acting and exceptional vocal performances. Cast as Moana at just 14 years old, Cravalho’s natural charisma and talent captured the character’s heart and determination. Her performance contributed significantly to the film’s widespread acclaim and Moana’s place as a beloved Disney heroine.
