“Tron: Ares” is the highly anticipated third installment in the iconic Tron film franchise, produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Under the direction of Joachim Rønning, known for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” the film promises to deliver a fresh narrative while maintaining the series’ signature digital aesthetic. The narrative is set to explore the emergence of a sentient program named Ares, portrayed by Jared Leto, as it crosses into the human world—a world that is unprepared for such an encounter. This concept naturally extends the Tron franchise’s long-standing fascination with artificial intelligence and the essence of humanity.

The cast of “Tron: Ares” also includes Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins, whose specific roles have yet to be disclosed. Gillian Anderson, celebrated for her roles in “The X-Files” and more recently “The Crown” and “Sex Education,” has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

Filming for “Tron: Ares” began on January 15, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada, with the production expected to wrap up on May 1, 2024. The project experienced delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike but is now moving forward. The screenplay is penned by Jesse Wigutow, and the film is produced by Emma Ludbrook, Justin Springer, and Jeffrey Silver, with Russell Allen serving as an executive producer.

The Tron franchise began in 1982, introducing audiences to the virtual world called “The Grid” and its creator, Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges. The 2010 sequel, “Tron: Legacy,” followed Kevin’s son, Sam Flynn, as he navigates the digital landscape his father created. The latest film is expected to be a soft reboot of the franchise, with a very low chance of the previous films’ cast members returning.

While the official release date for “Tron: Ares” has not been announced, it is anticipated to arrive in theaters worldwide sometime in 2025
