Downtown Disney is currently evolving. A major expansion of the West End has introduced a new mid-century modern aesthetic, sprawling open-air lawns, and a state-of-the-art stage for live performances. Key new additions include:

Essential History of the District

Downtown Disney opened on January 12, 2001, as a cornerstone of the project that transformed “Disneyland” (a single park) into the “Disneyland Resort” (a multi-day destination). This expansion included the opening of Disney California Adventure and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

Originally designed with an “art deco” California vibe, the district has hosted legendary tenants over the years, including the AMC 12 Theatres, ESPN Zone, and the House of Blues, many of which have since made way for the 2026 modern expansion.
