Who are Statler and Waldorf?

Statler and Waldorf are two beloved Muppet characters who are known for their sharp wit and sarcastic humor.

Created by Jim Henson, these elderly gentlemen are famous for their roles as hecklers, often providing comedic commentary from their iconic balcony seats during The Muppet Show. Statler and Waldorf’s humor is rooted in their constant critique of the performances, often targeting the show’s other characters, especially Kermit the Frog, with their biting and playful remarks. Their dynamic has made them fan favorites, embodying a unique charm with their blend of grumpiness and comedic timing.

Statler and Waldorf first appeared in The Muppet Show when it premiered in 1976. They have been performed by various puppeteers over the years. Jim Henson originally performed Waldorf, while Statler was performed by Richard Hunt. After Henson’s passing, Waldorf was taken over by Dave Goelz, and later by Jerry Nelson. Statler has been performed by Steve Whitmire and, more recently, by Eric Jacobson. The characters have also appeared in various Muppet films, television specials, and even guest spots in modern media, continuing to delight audiences with their timeless humor.
