Who is Sam Eagle?

Sam Eagle is a patriotic and dignified character from The Muppets, embodying a comically exaggerated sense of seriousness and formality. He is an American bald eagle, often portrayed as a stern and no-nonsense figure who prides himself on upholding traditional values and decorum.

Sam is frequently used to parody the overly serious bureaucrat or the self-important patriot, which makes his humor especially sharp when juxtaposed with the zany antics of the other Muppets.

First introduced in The Muppet Show, Sam often took on the role of moral commentator, attempting to inject high culture and seriousness into the chaotic variety show. His segments, such as his disapproving introductions or efforts to “class up” the proceedings, were often hilariously derailed by the other Muppets. One of his most iconic moments includes his rendition of “A Salute to All Nations, but Mostly America” during Muppet attractions in Disney parks.

The voice and puppetry of Sam Eagle were originated by Frank Oz, who brought the character’s uptight demeanor to life with his signature comedic timing. Over the years, the role has been taken over by Eric Jacobson, who continues to perform Sam with the same dedication to the character’s endearing blend of pomposity and cluelessness.
