Who is Aladdin?
Aladdin is a beloved character from Disney’s animated film Aladdin (1992), based on the Middle Eastern folktale “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” from One Thousand and One Nights.
Aladdin is portrayed as a kind-hearted, street-smart “diamond in the rough” who lives as a poor “street rat” in the fictional city of Agrabah. He dreams of a better life and hopes to rise above his humble beginnings. His life changes dramatically when he discovers a magic lamp containing a Genie who grants him three wishes. Through these wishes, Aladdin embarks on a journey of self-discovery, learning that being true to oneself is more important than wealth or status.
Aladdin is also known for his romantic relationship with Princess Jasmine, Agrabah’s headstrong and independent princess, and for his adventures with the Genie, his loyal monkey Abu, and the villainous sorcerer Jafar.
In the original 1992 animated film, Aladdin was voiced by Scott Weinger, an American actor best known for his role as Steve Hale on Full House. While Weinger provided the speaking voice, Aladdin’s singing voice was performed by Brad Kane. Weinger later reprised his role as Aladdin in various sequels, TV adaptations, and video games.
