The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Disney WorldScarlett Johansson just broke her silence with a major update on Disney’s long-awaited Tower of Terror movie.

In a recent interview, Johansson confirmed the project is still alive, calling it a hard nut to crack but something she’s determined to get right.

Reports suggest the new movie will feature a fresh story and characters, separate from the original Twilight Zone connection. We also know that Taika Waititi, director of the Thor movie series and Jojo Rabbit, has signed on to direct the movie. No official plot or release date has been announced, but Disney has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the ride to the big screen.

Tower of Terror has been a Disney park staple since 1994, whisking guests into a haunted 1939 Hollywood hotel with an elevator that plummets thirteen stories. The ride’s backstory revolves around five hotel guests who vanish after lightning strikes the buildings elevator on Halloween night. With its moody Art Deco setting and supernatural twists, Tower of Terror is widely considered one of Disney’s greatest original attractions.

Disney already turned the ride into a TV movie in 1997, starring Steve Guttenberg and a young Kirsten Dunst, which loosely adapted the original storyline.

For now, well keep a lookout for casting news, trailers, and Disney’s next elevator pitch for Tower of Terror!
